Des Moines woman-owned businesses to shop at downtown, East Village

If I can fit in a bike ride, a drink with friends, and shopping at my favorite local businesses, I will have considered it a great weekend.

I use Instagram to keep up with the stores I love, and I started noticing a trend: the woman-owned business community in Des Moines is strong. Not only are there a ton of them, their support for one another is inspiring.

Take, for example, when Jerrica Yasumura announced she would soon be opening her first bricks-and-mortar vintage clothing and homes goods store, Bungalow by Design, in the Highland Park neighborhood, the outpouring of supportive comments from fellow female entrepreneurs was incredible. Each of these women, who have worked hard on their own spaces, are ready to cheer her on and welcome her to their successful community.

Here's a list of some of the women-owned businesses I like to support:

Art Terrarium, 106 11th St. — A houseplant store in downtown Des Moines that offers plants and all the accessories. They also offer an interesting lineup of classes, like moss art creations and plant care for kiddos.

At the Extra Closet, Instagram — A vintage and second-hand seller who posts her finds on Instagram stories and live videos. Follow her to also find pop-up sales.

Bungalow by Design, Highland Park location coming soon — Formerly a booth at The Picker Knows in West Des Moines, this vintage shop offers everything from clothing to baskets and from pottery to kitchen supplies.

Copy + Paste DSM, 340 S.W. Fifth St. #121 — What started as a store to sell her planners, Copy + Paste DSM has quickly become a must-stop for all things stationery and quirky gifts. The store has things like greeting cards, games, crafts and self-care items. (Full disclosure: The owner, Britney Brown, and I went to college together. But I would shop there regardless.)

KIN, 333 E. Grand Ave. — A modern mystical shop that offers new and vintage jewelry, crystals, candles, incense and tarot decks.

MARNé, 350 E. Locust St. — This boutique sells clothing that is made by owners who commit to sustainable practices and use only vegan products.

Renovation Jungle, 607 37th St. — Another houseplant and accessories store, this one on Ingersoll Avenue. She also offers plant styling and virtual consultations.

THE COLLECTIVE, 3523 Sixth Ave. — Now open in Highland Park in a larger store, THE COLLECTIVE is a sustainable supply shop with products for everyday living, including a bulk refill station for things like soap, lotion and shampoo.

Thistle's Summit, 340 S.W. Fifth St. #122 — A vegan and gluten-free bakery that sells at retail partners and markets in central Iowa now has its first storefront in downtown Des Moines. Visit on the weekends for a rotating cast of baked goods, plus items from local artists.

ZHOOSH, 313 E. Fifth St. — A furniture and retail store that has vintage and modern finds, plus quirky gifts and tons of self-care items.
