Iron Bull's tarot cards in Dragon Age: Inquisition reveal a lot of inner conflict and the possibility of his betrayal in the Trespasser DLC.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is unique from the series' other titles because the characters are assigned tarot cards. The tarot deck itself was part of the collector's edition, but the art could be seen in the game's codex pages or when selecting which companions to go out with. The art is not only pretty, but the tarot cards are quite meaningful as well.

Tarot can tell a lot about a person, from their motivations to their future. Cards can also be reversed and take on another meaning entirely. For Dragon Age companions like Iron Bull, the cards reveal more than players know when they first meet him. He has four cards in total, the default, the one for if the Chargers are saved in his personal quest, the one when they are sacrificed in his personal quest, and one for his romance.

Iron Bull's default card is actually a card people typically wish to avoid, the major arcana, the Devil. It is connected to Saturn and the earth element and represents fear, enslavement, restraints, and materialism. This card represents that Iron Bull does pose a possible threat to the Inquisition since he is Ben Hassrath. However, he can change. In reverse, the Devil means freedom from chains and breaking addictions.

Based on his possible betrayal in Trespasser, this card is a warning to players. While Iron Bull may seem laid back and honest, he has ties to a looming threat. The qunari eventually invade with plans to indoctrinate and kill others in their way. Having the Devil arcana, Iron Bull is on the precipice of being a part of this invasion or rejecting it depending on which way the card faces.

Iron Bull obtains the Wheel of Fortune card after his personal quest is complete, and the Inquisitor decided to not sacrifice his Chargers. While the card looks negative, its meaning is positive. It is a lucky card and represents change and destiny that exists outside Iron Bull's influence. At first, Iron Bull is conflicted, which represents the card in reverse, which can represent an unforeseen setback and disappointment. In the long run though, it is for the best.

The Wheel of Fortune is associated with Jupiter and the element of fire. Due to his default card being connected to the earth element, Iron Bull feels out of his element with his card. However, fire also means ambition. What it burns down can make room for something new or even better. It is also worth noting that the card that comes after the Wheel of Fortune is Justice, which means fairness.

If the Chargers are sacrificed, Iron Bull gets the minor arcana card, the 10 of Swords. While it may seem celebratory in design, the 10 of Swords is known as a negative tarot card. It means crisis, betrayal, and a painful end. This card actually may be the biggest hint in the game of Iron Bull's betrayal in the Trespasser DLC.

In its suit, 10 is a number that means completion. With the Chargers sacrificed, Iron Bull has resolved to go all in with the qunari and their invasion. The sword suit deals with the mind and intellect, showing that what happens will be a result of Iron Bull's own mind making a choice. The violence in the meaning of the card can both mean Iron Bull's attack on the Inquisitor and his own downfall. Swords are also connected to the element of air, showing Bull may have lost his footing on what is dear and true to him.

Iron Bull's romance card is the 10 of Coins. The coins suit is the suit of the material and is connected to the earth element. Since it shares the same element as his default card, it shows that Iron Bull is in his element while romancing the Inquisitor. There is a comfort zone in their relationship. The 10 of coins means wealth, family, and long-term success. It is a symbol of how the Inquisitor and Iron Bull can enrich each other's lives and be family in a time when family can be lacking.

Once again, 10 is the number of completion. This could literally mean that Iron Bull and the Inquisitor make each other feel complete. The fact that the card is connected to the material world can also mean their attraction for each other is quite physical.
