An old, and popular, Canadian table game is being made right here in Maine.

It's called Crokinole, which was first played in Ontario in 1876.

Until a few months ago, Rick Hazelton had never heard of or seen a Crokinole board. But he has experience making other board games. For three decades he's been crafting cribbage boards and card holders, just to name a few.

What started as a basement hobby turned into a profitable venture when he teamed up with Diversions Puzzles and Games, a local shop, to sell his products.

Today, the store both sells and showcases his work, including his handmade Crokinole boards, a special request that came from the store's manager.

"I said, 'I got no idea what they are,' came home did the search on YouTube and the internet, got the dimensions and everything, made one, took it over, and he said, 'That's exactly what I want,'" Hazelton said.

Not only has Rick learned to build the boards, he enjoys playing the game as well.

The goal is to flick a puck into the center hole or keep them as close as possible. It's a family game, but in Canada, where it seems to be most popular, people take it pretty seriously.

"It's a big Canadian game. They actually have a national championship up there. I don't know if there's a hundred people or a thousand people, but they do have a national championship."

Rick says the pandemic has kept him pretty busy. With so many people at home looking for games to play, he's been building a few of just about everything, including Crokinole boards.

"People want to play, and this is certainly different from Monopoly or some other board game."
