Werewolf by Night's Michael Giacchino talked about Marvel Studios' support of his gory and horror-inspired ideas for the Halloween special.

Werewolf by Night director Michael Giacchino has revealed that higher-ups at Marvel Studios were surprisingly on-board with the gory direction the Halloween special would be taking. These details come just days after new information on the first R-rated Marvel Cinematic Universe project was revealed.

Based on the similarly named Marvel comic character, Marvel Studios' Werewolf by Night is an upcoming Halloween special set to air on Disney Plus that follows the adventures of a covert group of expert monster hunters caught in a succession contest involving strange artifacts until the proceedings threaten to have deadly consequences when a powerful creature appears in the area. While anticipation for new Marvel projects is high as phase 4 winds down, many casual fans unfamiliar with comics were left wondering who the titular Werewolf by Night is.

Details of the production and direction of the film were given in an interview given to ScreenRant by Giacchino, the director of the project and the genius composer behind the Oscar-worthy score of recent cinematic success The Batman. When queried about Marvel Studios' possible restriction of the special’s gore, he revealed that he had received support to the contrary. “You know, it's funny, they never [did], at least if they did, they never did to me directly. They were always very supportive, and just allowed me to keep pushing forward, because so many of my comments during reviews and things would be like, 'Can we put more blood on that? Can we add more?'" he explained. "Or even when we were making the thing, I remember a couple of days before shooting one of the scenes going, 'Hey, what would happen if she cut his hand off? How do we do that?' Everyone was always just like, 'Okay, well, let's go for it.' So, I have to give them a lot of credit in that regard, that they really trusted me to do those things.”

Going further, the composer-turned-director praised the producers for their open-minded approach to his directorial style and leanings, betraying some initial skepticism that he would be able to get away with many of the things that the upcoming special will feature when his involvement was announced in March. Blood and gore have been distinctly absent from the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its inception, with hardly any exception over dozens of projects. With the recent announcement of Deadpool 3 and a Blade reboot being in the MCU, this might be set to change for more than just this Halloween special.

While not a major part of the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe rollout leading up to Phase 5, Werewolf by Night still has a lot going for it, as it is the most visually distinct MCU project in years in a time where many fans are slowly tiring of the nigh-formulaic nature of superhero films. In addition to the clear inspiration taken from bygone eras and the horror-centric theme, the Werewolf by Night will push the envelope in ways many fans will take in like a breath of fresh air.

While this unique state of affairs is a selling point to many, some others are concerned about the special’s alienation from the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially as Phase 4 of the MCU seeks to round up older stories and introduce the future of the MCU. It remains to be seen how the seeming standalone work will be received in the era of ambitious crossovers and universe-spanning events.

Werewolf by Night is slated for release on Disney Plus on October 7, 2022.
